Clay Arts, Utah is THRILLED to host Artist Eric Stearns workshop this upcoming July held at Adjusting Sails Dirtworks in Sugarhouse. Learn to pierce and raku your art in this hands on workshop! The first evening will be an artist talk, second day a demonstration, and third will be hands on piercing and rakuing! You will need to bring a leather hard piece and bisqued piece to the third day to participate. Limited availability so register quick. Clay Arts Utah members have priority. Registration opens Friday, May 19th at 8:00AM.

Artist Call for Submission :: Exhibition/Sale in "Pilar's Garden"

Clay Arts, Utah is very excited to announce that we have been selected by the Pilar Pobil Legacy Foundation “PPLF” to participate in a juried exhibition/sale to be held in Salt Lake City’s legendary space known as “Pilar’s Garden” on August 26-27, 2017. Hours will be from 4-8pm each day.

All current CAU members (become a member here) are invited to submit their work for consideration in this inaugural “Ceramic Art in Pilar’s Garden” show.

Eight to ten artists will be selected by a 2-person jury including highly-respected, local art appraiser, gallery owner and artist, Patrick Hoagland along with another juror chosen by Mr. Hoagland.

Selected artists will receive approximately 75 sq. ft. of garden space in which to set up their display. Artists will be responsible for their own display materials, including tables (max. table size, 6’ banquet), pedestals and other display walls/hardware. Hanging spaces will be available on fences that surround the garden. Wall, floor, and pedestal work accepted.

An exhibit space fee of $150 will be collected after your acceptance into the show. This entry fee is used for the purchase of light buffet items, wine and soft drinks that will be served throughout the show. Each artist will be responsible for his or her sales. No commission is taken on works sold.

About the Pilar Pobil Legacy Foundation:

The foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established to secure the legacy of artist Pilar Pobil. They are committed to preserving her Salt Lake City home and continuing her contributions to the arts through educational programs and exhibitions for the community.

Filled with Pilar’s work and her eclectic style of furnishings, the home expresses Pobil’s Spanish heritage. The spectacular gardens are a social center in the warmer months while the house and studio are open throughout the year. In addition to the annual 3-day event, “Art in Pilar’s Garden”, which features both local and international artists and has become a mainstay of the Utah art scene, there are year-round educational, literary, musical and visual-art happenings.

The specific purpose for the foundation is to raise money to purchase Pilar’s home and assure that it is preserved in perpetuity as a center for exhibits, retreats, educational programs and workshops.

Dave Socwell Cuerda Seca 2-day Workshop

Clay Arts, Utah Artist, Dave Socwell, will be teaching a two day workshop on using Cuerda Seca on your pottery. Cuerda Seca translates to dry cord/rope and in the pottery world is a black wax with manganese. The first day of the workshop Dave will teach us how to apply the Cuerda Seca in a thoughtful manner to bisqued  pottery. The second portion of this workshop will be glazing within your design. This workshop is for ALL LEVELS.

Giselle Hicks :: Coil and Pinch Handbuilt Vessels

Join Kimball Art Center in the studio with exhibiting artist, Giselle Hicks! This one day workshop will focus on a fundamental clay forming technique: coil and pinch. This way of building can be used to make hand-built vessels or sculptural forms. Giselle will demonstrate her technique for making simple and complex forms with hand rolled coils and a banding wheel. Students will have the opportunity to learn her delicate technique and make their own coil and pinched forms as well.

Lauren Gallaspy Workshop :: Skin Deeep // Innovative Overglaze Surfaces for Ceramics

Join the Kimball Clay Studio with exhibiting artist Lauren Gallaspy! This workshop is designed for students to learn the basics of overglaze ceramic surfacing. Students will have an opportunity to use china paints and underglazes to create personal poetic imagery and pattern on glazed ceramic plates and/or work they bring in to decorate. The class welcomes all levels of ability from beginners to advanced ceramic artists. Whether you are looking to improve your surface patterning skills, activate ceramic vessels with painted imagery, or simply experiment with non-traditional approaches to overglazing, this class has it all. Learn about underglaze application, water-based china painting techniques, as well as metallic luster techniques. Class discussions and demonstrations will be centered on image transfer approaches, pattern development, composition, underglaze and china painting techniques, as well as some historical and contemporary examples of innovative ceramic surfaces. Students will come away with at least one decorated ceramic plate and additional decorated pieces as able.

UTAH’S BEST ANSWER FOR MEANINGFUL HOLIDAY SHOPPING

“Black Friday” shopping doesn’t have to mean crowded malls with generic gifts made far, far away. Here in Salt Lake City there’s a better answer for Thanksgiving weekend shopping, at the 17th annual Clay Arts Utah holiday sale.
The Sugarhouse Park Garden Center hosts the event from 10am to 5pm, on Friday and Saturday, November 25-26.  Admission and parking are free.  25 talented local artists will offer their hand-made clay artwork for sale, including functional pottery, dinnerware, sculpture, and decorative artwork.
It’s an opportunity for shoppers to browse comfortably, meet the artists, buy local, and support the arts education programs fostered by Clay Arts Utah, a 501(c)3 charitable organization.
Participating artists are skilled in clay and ceramics arts, including wheel-thrown and hand-built pieces. Included are several award-winning artists and noted studio teachers. The range of designs and of prices (from as low as $10) will make for a colorful and inspiring shopping experience. 

Sugarhouse Park Garden Center is located at 1602 E 2100 S in Salt Lake City.
